Oak Heights Perseid Meteor Shower Weekend

What will the Perseid meteor shower be like this year? Will there be a meteor storm as predicted by two British scientists? Will it be much the same as last year, a hundred meteors per hour with a higher number of brighter meteors than normal? Either way, this year's Perseid meteor shower will be spectacular. To enjoy the shower at its best, a special dark sky observing weekend commencing Thursday, August 11, will be held at Oak Heights. All members are invited to participate.

The shower peaks on August 11/12 -- Thursday evening/Friday morning. The five day old moon will set around 10:00 pm, giving us six hours of darkness. That is a very long and demanding observing session. To help you survive the night, you should bring the following items with you: a reclining lawn chair or adjustable camp cot, a sleeping bag, warm clothing including a hat and gloves, munchies (muffins, stale chocolate bars, etc.) and bug spray.
