STARFEST 2000
Keynote Speakers

Ray Villard (Harvesting Light With Hubble; Hubble: A Decade Of Discovery) is the Public Information Manager for the Space Telescope Science Institute at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He is responsible for disseminating news about the most recent discoveries made with the Hubble Space Telescope. Previously, he was an Associate Editor for Astronomy Magazine and Star & Sky magazine. He has written a variety of freelance articles for magazines, encyclopedias, and scripts for several syndicated science programs on public radio. He has received several NASA service awards for his contribution to the Hubble telescope project.

On Friday, in "Harvesting Light With Hubble", Ray will give an overview of how HST makes observations, including the proposal selection process, telescope scheduling, and orbital consideration. The talk will take a look at the workings of Hubble's cameras, and illustrate how the data are cleaned-up and converted to color pictures. Details of specific historic HST observations will be reviewed including the Hubble deep field. The talk will take a look at advanced cameras planned for Hubble, and plans for the Next Generation Space Telescope.

On Saturday, for our feature presentation, "Hubble: A Decade Of Discovery", Ray will present an overview of key Hubble research and discoveries since its 1990 launch. HST has made important findings across a broad range of astronomical research areas. The talk will illustrate Hubble's "greatest hits" scientifically, and show it's most photogenic celestial targets. Stories behind some of HST's top headlines will be discussed.
