SPEAKERS

Michael J. Cook (Advocating Responsible Outdoor Lighting) is a Senior Land Use Planner with the Region of Durham, a 1,000 sq. mi. area east of Toronto comprising eight municipalities. Michael is an experienced amateur astronomer, and is a member of the International Dark-Sky Association. He is working with local government to build awareness and enact new policies to control light pollution.

Michael will outline a process that individual citizens or groups can follow when dealing with municipal officials on matters of light pollution. His process has successfully convinced the City of Oshawa to adopt full cut-off street lighting, earning the City the RASC Light Pollution Abatement Award in 2001. He will also share ideas for building public awareness for light pollution.
