Doug Welch (Observing "from" the Moon), is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. His interest in observational astronomy began as a teenage member of the RASC Ottawa Centre and AAVSO and he is still an active participant in amateur astronomy activities.
In the late 1960's, it seemed like lunar observatories were the obvious next step. Since then, satellites in Earth orbit have done the vast majority of the observations from space. In this presentation Doug will describe the observational work which has been done from the lunar surface and also the prospects for new experiments which can best be done from the Moon. One of these areas, VLF (Very Low Frequency) radio astronomy, is an area in which amateur astronomers can play a role even now.
