Terence Dickinson

Terence Dickinson (Choosing And Using Amateur Astronomical Telescopes) is Canada's leading astronomy writer. He is the author of thirteen books and has received numerous national and international awards, including the Order of Canada, for his work. Recently Terence also had an asteroid named after him, 5272 Dickinson. Terence will be our key note speaker on Friday afternoon and on Saturday evening hosts an astronomical version of the "Tonight Show".

One of the most frequently asked questions by someone new to the hobby is "Which telescope should I buy? What telescope is right for me?" Trying to make sense of the glossy ads in the magazines without understanding the limitations and advantages of the various types of telescopes is extremely difficult. To help you choose a telescope that is right for you, Terry will describe the three major types of telescopes and mountings available, their characteristics, costs, etc. Most importantly Terry will describe and demonstrate what is involved in setting up and using each type of telescope in the field, because ultimately this will determine how often the telescope is used.
