STARFEST 2000: What's New?

GROUP PHOTOGRAPH

On Saturday at 4:00 p.m. we would like to take a group photograph of everyone at Starfest. To make this photograph more interesting we would like everyone who has a Starfest T-shirt to bring and wear their oldest for the photograph. We will arrange people by the year of their T-shirts. If you don't have a T-shirt, don't be shy, we still want you in the picture.

COMMEMORATIVE DISPLAY

On the north side of the large tent photographs and other Starfest Memorabilia will be on display.

OBSERVING THROUGH THE DECADES PANEL DISCUSSION

Observational astronomy has changed dramatically over the last fifty years. New telescope and eyepiece designs, combined with specialty filters, like the OIII, have pushed deep sky observing to new limits. Where once only a hint of nebulae was visible, we can now see intricate detail. The advent of computers and CCD cameras has not only enhanced our ability to see the night sky, but also the manner in which we navigate among the stars. Who would have thought, a decade ago, that you "could tell your telescope where to go" and it would respond, once it found the object, with detailed information about that object.

Through the eyes of experienced observers who became involved in astronomy in their childhood or teens in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s, we explore how these changes have impacted the way people do astronomy. Join Terrence Dickinson, Cathy McWatters, Dave Petherick and Kendra Angles in this fascinating look at what unites, yet distinguishes each generation of astronomer.

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES

On Friday night at 8:00 p.m. a movie with an astronomical theme will be shown in the Small Tent.
