Doug Cunningham, "Look Up and See .... Infinity!", Small Tent, Friday 2:30 p.m., is a retired Science and Outdoor Education teacher who has been an active amateur astronomer for more than 38 years. He and his wife, Paula, live in Lion's Head on the Georgian Bay side of the Bruce Peninsula where they enjoy the magnificent night skies from their Quetican Observatory.
The Northern Bruce Peninsula, surrounded by large bodies of water on three sides and located far from Southern Ontario's major population centers, is a perfect place to "Look Up and See Infinity!". However, we can't take our magnificent night time skies for granted. Our beautiful Bruce peninsula, home to two National Parks, is only a day's drive for more than 30 million people and already development pressures, increasing values of Real Estate, and cottage construction are setting records. Five years ago Doug combined with Bruce Peninsula Environment Group members Graham Thomas and Don McIlwraith to lobby the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula and the local Ratepayers' Associations with the aim of increasing their awareness of Light Pollution and the need to promote Good Neighbor Lighting Practices. The net result of these efforts has been the passage of a Dark Sky Proclamation by the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula on August 23rd, 2004. This presentation will showcase the Bruce Peninsula's pristine night skies for amateur astronomy, and discuss our experience in the political arena lobbying for a Dark Sky Proclamation.
