SPEAKERS

Paul Gray and Dave Lane, "Supernova Scotia! (and New Brunswick), Take 2", Main Tent, Saturday 10:00 a.m.

Paul Gray has been a member of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) for 18 years and an amateur astronomer since the age of 13. Now as a Civil Technician in Fredericton, he enjoys deep sky observing with his 12½" Dobsonian from his rural backyard. He is particularly interested in dark nebulae, and is the author of the Dark Nebulae section of the annual Observer's Handbook.

Dave Lane is presently 2nd Vice-President of the RASC. He has been into astronomy since high school dabbling in just about every aspect of the hobby. Lately he's been concentrating his efforts on building, automating, and using his new backyard Abbey Ridge Observatory for research projects.

In 1995, Dave and Paul became the first Canadians to discover a supernova (1995F) entirely from within Canada. Recently they repeated their one-shot-wonder with their second discovery 2005B in 2005! A lot has changed in supernova hunting since 1995. The construction of Dave's Abbey Ridge Observatory, with its automation features, and efficient image checking software have made things easier, but the competition has also become fierce.
